Costa Rica has become internationally
known as one of the best destinations for the practice
of sportfishing, offering you places with good fishing
almost all year round, in salt or fresh waters.
Sailfish, marlins, roostersfish, tunas, dorados, wahoos,
tarpons and over fifteen other species are what you can
expect to find in our coasts, rivers and lagoons. Anglers
have got more than 70 world-record catches in our country
waters, including blue marlins, sailfish and yellow fin
tunas.
You will always have some destination in our country for
a sportfishing trip, the seasons in the different areas
varies with migratory patterns, seasons, wind, weather
and currents. You will find some information in this site
regarding seasons in the different fishing areas, but
remember those are only general guides. |

North Pacific
On this side of our country there are many important
destinations with great sportfishing: Flamingo and
nearby places such as Potrero and Brasilito, Tamarindo,
Coco Beach and Ocotal Beach.
You will have the opportunity to catch on these
waters sailfish, marlin (black, blue, striped),
yellowfin tuna, wahoo, roosterfish, mackerel,
dorado, red snapper and other variety of sport
fish.

Central Pacific
Quepos is the center of offshore and inshore fishing
in the Central Pacific. Also you will find good
fishing from Jaco and the Marriott Los Sueños
Marina.
Billfish, dorados, yellowfin tunas and marlins
are just a few of the species you will find offshore
on this area. Inshore waters offer you roosterfish,
mackeral, red snapper, wahoo and snook.
Complete fishing packages are available in the different
hotels this area offer.

South Pacific
On this side of the Pacific the main destination
for sportfishing is Drake Bay. Also there is great
fishing in areas such as Puerto Jimenez and Golfito.
Wahoo, big cubera and roosterfish are one of
the most commonly caught fishes on this area,
but there are also yellowfin tuna, dorados, sailfishs
and occasional marlin.
Sportfishing packages are available in different
hotels and lodges, such as Aguila de Osa Inn, Lapa
Rios Hotel, Casa Corcovado and other in this amazing
area.

Caribbean
On the Caribbean side of our country you can find
great fishing in Barra del Colorado and Tortuguero.
You will find freshwater lagoons and rivers, where
you might catch one of the world’s best tarpon
and snook fishing.
Tarpon: year round, with the peak season from
January to May. From September to October, when
the ocean flattens, the boats can go to the ocean
side, where the fishes congregate outside the
river mouth. During the last years, fishing has
been good in July-August, even when the sea is
calm, the fishes move to the ocean, giving more
action opportunities along the coast.
Snook: all year round, peak season during April
and May. September and October are the best months,
along the coast.
The main lodges are Rio Colorado Lodge, Samay
Lagoon Lodge and Silver King Lodge. They offer
packages for fishing, including accommodation,
meals and fishing trip to the near spots. |
